diy aquaponics fish tank heater


Id like you to imagine a wall of 1 gallon plastic milk jugs set at about 45 degrees so that the tops of the jugs protrude from the cavity in the wall.  In the spout there would be a paper towel shaped into a cone and filled with some small grow media like Coir.

In the jug there is a volume of nutrient rich water from your aquaponic system.  When first planted from seed each container would have one lettuce plant inside the cone of media.  The level of the nutrient rich water would be just high enough at first to moisten the cone.

As the lettuce grows the solution would be used and the level would fall creating an aerobic space where some of the roots become exposed.  As the plant contiues to grow the solution will be used up by the rrots that grow into the water.  5 to 7 weeks later the lettuce is mature and ready for harvest.

Several weeks create a harvest that required no electricity for pumps!

     Its been a week no since Trinity Aquaponics began recording water loss in a residential sized system that we maintain for research.  So far Im very happy with the results.
     The system being used to collect data is a 400 gallon, 2 raft bed system.  The raft beds together equal a 3 x 8 x 1 grow space.  Measures have been taken to minimize water lost to evaporation, including covering the fish tank and mineralization tank.  I believe that these measures have significantly reduced water loss because of the minimal surface area of water exposed to the elements.
     The average temperature where the system is located has been 97.5 degrees Fahrenheit.  Despite the high temperatures the system has only lost 7.95 gallons over the course of the week.  Im very happy with these results and have high hopes for the continuation of this research.
     A soil garden of comparable grow space would use this amount of water in a day or two in this area.  A week of recording water loss is not enough time to record substantial research results.  So as the research continues I will update the blog with further findings.  Like I said, I have high hopes for this research and am very excited with the first weeks results.

Sepp Holzer, a man who not only produces food in a very unlikely location, at a high and frigid altitude in Austria, but is also growing very unlikely crops there as well -- and all without the use of chemicals, and with minimal input of human labour.

I guess you could call him a European counterpart of people like Bill Mollison and Masanobu Fukuoka -- as all three independently discovered ways of working with nature that save money and labour and that dont degrade the environment, but actually improve it. In Holzers case, he was effectively running a permaculture farm for more than two decades before he even realised his unconventional approach could be termed permaculture.

Hi Everyone!

Ive been getting a lot of support lately with compliments of the research Ive been sharing. Thanks - it really means a lot. I just thought Id make you aware of my Donate Button on the site - just down a bit and on the right!

Ive been doing this for about a year and a half now and get quite a bit of traffic on the site (over 3000 hits alone last week), so Im evidently doing some good things!

This is a non-profit project in attempt to enlighten people to make that thoughtful observation of the naturally occurring systems going on around them so they can utilise them to avoid thoughtless labour. For me, successful Permaculture is really about living in the Now, the Moment. The tangible reality - not the fiction. I hope that Ive achieved that somehow for some of you.

If you are thinking you would like to design an aquaponic system, and grow and abundance of food in a perfect nutrient cycle - Then READ THIS FIRST.

What about those claims of "Lettuce in 5 weeks"?  Is it true? 
Lettuce at 52 days Utility cost $67.00
Lettuce at 58 days no supplemental light.
LOL... I guess you could have eaten these plants at 5 weeks.

The aquaponics industry is full of wild claims.  You may have heard about the balance aquaponics brings to gardening.  Supposedly the fish food will provide all the nutrients save maybe the chelated iron.  If so why is there so much discussion about balancing nutrients within the system?

The claims that vegitables will grow faster stronger more disease resistant are hype.  Aquaponics is not that simple. There areaquaponic farms that consistently produce above average crops, but be aware they do it with professional farming techniques and pay close attention to the details.  Its like anything else; it only works if you are well trained to do the job.

So you say "Ill take a class and become a professional aquaponic farmer".   Im not going to tell you all these classes are a sham, but the truth is most who teach aquapponics do so to make ends meet.  They often dont even run a profitable aquaponics farm.   This industry is so new that there are no real credentials.  Whens the last time you heard someone say they were majoring in aquaponics?  Beware of the scams.

You may be wondering why I still practice aquaponics.  Its certainly not for profit, or to lower my food bill.  I simply like doing it, but after one year I have decided to sell my fish, and convert to Bioponics.  Ive also decided to plant with the seasons and not expect much growth during the Winter.  No more heating bills. No more lighting bills. No more fish food.

There are a number of problems associated with grow lights
  • Expensive to purchase
  • Require expensive ballasts
  • Expensive to operate
  • Short limited life spans
  • Hazardous materials
  • Fragile
  • Excessive heat
  • Limited K values
 
After quite a bit of investigation I have come to believe there are two types that stand out
  • Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)
  • LED

Neither is cheap to purchase and at this time LED is very expensive, but I just found components to build your own LED light bar which exhibit none of the problems Ive listed above!

A Standard LED Grow Light

The components to build and equivalent 400W 36000 lumen grow light at less than 1/2 the cost!


 To build the equivalent grow light would require one PCB and 40 LED Chips at a cost of about $100 plus some labor and a few items like Power supply, solder, wire and box.

This is just one of many LED K values that are available and a wider spectrum could be made by including other K valued LED Chips.

12V power supplies are very inexpensive thanks to the computer industry. 

Total cost about $200

While searching for your components you may find some bulbs are listed in mcd rather than lumens.  Here is a converter calculator to help you design the grow light you wish to build.

diy aquaponics on a budget



  My goal with these designs is to save energy by running a pump intermittently rather than 24/7 using an ebb&flow design, but the problem with ebb&flow is the regurgitation of solid fish waste and uneaten food.

  I think these ideas would only be worth while if the system were small.  With a large system the cost of circulating 24/7 would be applied to a much larger grow bed array.   But for a small system where pennies count and the harvest is small, I think there are ways to make an ebb&flow work.  Here are a couple ideas Ive had.

   I have drawn this system that would use the ebb & flow method and return clean water to the fish tank.  Water would be held in the settling/filter tank while the pump is on.  Then the clean water would return to the fish tank when the pump is off.
   An overflow would allow excess water to flow back to the fish tank. 
While the pump is filling the settling tank a solenoid valve would hold the water in the grow beds and settling tank.  A timer would turn the pump and the normally open solenoid valve off allowing the grow beds and settling tank to drain back to the fish tank.
   This design is an improvement over the classic ebb&flow design because the settling tank allows for the water to be cleaned before returning to the fish tank.


Here is another concept drawing which uses vertical gardening and a reservoir/settling tank.  The water is pumped to the reservoir with an intermittent timer.  An overflow tube would return excess water to the fish tank.
Filtered drip lines from the reservoir would supply a constant water flow to the vertical tubes.  If made of fiberglass reenforced weed cloth the water would be returned to the fish tank with plenty of aeration.



With proper filtration around the pump the system could be set up as simple as this. 
The pump would be on a timer.  The vertical media does not require constant flow.

I checked my visitor stats and it appears this is a popular page.  I feel bad that I have yet verify these calculation, and want to say right up front -  These spread sheets need to be checked by someone familiar with this topic.

Im anxious to get started, and I feel that I have learned enough to proceed with the aquaponic system before working out all the details of temperature control, and a mathematical model of the entire system. It really comes down to conservation, and in my case 80% of the loss will be through the glazing.  It seems the more economical approach will be to address this one issue.

I cant guarantee that the formulas are correct, but you may find them useful if you too are trying to work through these calculations.  My goal is to create a spread sheet that will offer a systematic approach, and all the calculations required in the design of a year round thermally balanced (72F +/- 10F) aquaponic green house system using solar to accomplish a minimal utility demand.

Eventually I would like to incorporate a graph to show the rate of change as the differential temperatures of the thermal storage and the aquaponic system change.

I feel that the ThermDynamicDensity Spread Sheet has been verified. its unfortunate that thermodynamic formulas are presented in so many different units.  I have done my best to verify the formulas from several sources, but the conversions become quite complicated.

Until I read this story about the [California Grange being sued by the National Grange] I never gave a second thought to the Grange.  To me it was just a big building where they held square dances, but this article  [ What is the Grange?  ]  gives a much better description.

Gwen Schantz is chief operating officer of the Brooklyn Grange rooftop commercial farm in Long Island City, Queens.
According to this article, the California Grange has begun to attract "family sustainable farming".  Im guessing we backyard gardeners might fit that description.   The California Grange has also taken a stance against GMO.
Rick Keel, a spokesman for the California State Grange recently said this “For lack of a better term, it seems to be ‘foodies’ who care about community today and see the Grange as a way to provide community service,”

"Since 1873 the California State Grange has championed the interests of farmers, ranchers, and rural Americans. The Grange stresses community service, and its Youth programs are open to all, urban and rural alike. There are over 185 chapters across the state.  For more information contact the California State Grange at (916) 454-5805. " - California Grange

With the Farm to Fork movement catching on; aquaponics and the local Grange may be a very good combination.   Id like to encourage you to look into your local Grange for services.  It may take a while to bring the National Grange around to supporting sustainable farming, but it has to start somewhere.  The aquaponic and home gardening community have become forces of significant proportion.  I think we can make a difference.

A look at the construction of my Earthan Beds. Previously these beds were Wicking Beds with sand in the bottom, but now I want to be able to let aquaponic water flow freely through the beds so Ive replaced the sand with rocks. The soil I place back into the Earthan Beds is a mix of sand, compost, pumice, and garden soil, amended with Azomite. Pumice is not required, but it provides plenty of surface area for bacteria while making the soil light and airy. When I first started to use my wicking beds I noticed the smell of anaerobic bacteria. By allowing some water to flow out of the overflow tube each day I was able to prevent this anaerobic condition. When I removed the sand and soil from the wicking beds I found no sign of anaerobic bacteria. By letting the water flow through the Earthan Beds I will create a good environment for nitrification and prevent anaerobic conditions. The water from the Bioponic System will also provide nitrates and other elements for good plant growth.

zrumplina diy aquaponics


It turns out, PVC isnt just my favourite product to work with, its also a thermoplastic.

Who knew?

I should have remembered the thing I read back when I was making aquaponics grow tubes, but you dont know what Im talking about, so theres probably no point in referencing it.

But on the up side, there is a point to this post.

And thats that PVC is even more excellent than I first thought.

It turns out (not my idea) that PVC can be heated, formed into a new shape, then cooled so it sets and stays with its new shape.

Youve gotta be happy with that.

PVC, but whatever shape you want!

I started by holding part of the delivery system from my demand fish feeder under a candle until it got a bit hot.

Im always torn between the desire to keep a museum of the things I build as part of doing this "120 things in 20 years" caper, and grabbing a lump of kit from a previous project and reusing it at the expense of said project.

Oh well, I guess if its worth building, its worth building again.
The next step was to squish it a bit.

The steps after this include trying to make it fit the fillet knife I keep ominously lurking in my little tackle box.

I say ominously because when Im fishing, it tends to be used to hack at somewhat suspect portions of slightly off bait sitting in the sun, then when I get home, I expect it to shed its immuno-challenging persona with a quick wash n a soapy sink, and stop threatening to cut me and give me some hideous infection.

I also expect it to get suddenly sharp enough to fillet fish.

Sometimes I expect too much.

But this time it turns out I oddly expect around about whats reasonable to expect.

This is mainly due to my sudden understanding of how to make stuff sharp. Ive been using a honing steel for the last 20 years to keep my kitchen knives useful, but for some reason, suddenly I now seem to be able to make them half again as sharp. (((see chunking) actually see the top of the chunking article because that makes more sense) or this if you want to skip the links...

If you learn Morse code, you learn it gradually for a bit, then suddenly instead of thinking of the word "and" as...

blah dash etc

you start to know it as a single entity in much the same way as you originally knew the individual letters. ie the group "and" becomes the 27th letter of the alphabet. The result is that the learning process is non-linear, and you tend to gain new ability in "chunks" rather than gradually.)

Why am I distractedly talking about chunking motor tasks?...

So...

Sharp is much better.

And oddly safer.

Anyway, the result is that now, more than ever, I need a sheath for the razor blade that rattles around in my tackle box and kitchen.

The knife in question is only an inexpensive thing, and it doesnt hold an edge for long, but it does readily allow itself to take on a scary sharpness. I guess theres a compromise between gaining an edge, and keeping an edge, and this inexpensive fillet knife has chosen as its lot in life, to be way sharp. At least for a bit.

Quite useful for fish filleting really.

PVC is a thermoplastic!...

The "holding it over a flame" thing works a bit, but its a little tricky softening the entire thing so you can bend the entire thing all at once.

But boiling water made that a whole heap easier.

If you dont have an enormous pot of boiling water, I recommend you send any kids safely away for the afternoon, and just dump boiling water all over the place in order to heat up your PVC.





It actually doesnt take that much.

Im guessing a hair dryer would do it.

I used half a cutting board, and a sizzling steak hotplate holder to squish it flat after I heated it to bendy point.

You could also just step on it.

Its quite soft, and cures to its new shape in only a few seconds.




The result was something that looked a lot like a folded flat length of PVC pipe.

Actually this is (obviously) the result of a different method, but both ended with a folded length of PVC tubing.

This one was done with the aid of two clamps, and pouring boiling water all over the house.




There are probably a dozen more ways to do it.

Heat it, then squish it flat.

This post has derailed a bit, so to re-cap, Im making a knife sheath from PVC pipe by heating it and reforming it to shape.

Place your knife over the top of the flattened PVC envelope, and loosely trace around it with some kind of marking device leaving around a centimetre of excess white space around the blade.

I used a pen, but you could also use whatever marking method your culture enjoys.






Next I cut out the shape with tin snips, scissors, and a hacksaw to test as many methods I could find at hand. Thats why this photo actually came before the last.

Yeah...

time can do that.


The result was the start of a pretty convincing knife sheath.










I drilled a few holes.











I added a loop rubber band made from a slice of bicycle tyre inner tube (bicycle tyre inner tube rubber bands last around 25,000 years longer than normal rubber bands)









The loop will hook over the handle and act as the fail safe, and might allow me to wear it in a way that might be a little more practical than hanging it on a belt.










And a few more holes to snug it all up tight to the blade with some multi-strand artificial fibre twine and we are done.

I count this as a total success.

Much less dangerous.

And now probably safe enough to take on an epic adventure.



It will still need to be washed after using it to handle bait, but at the moment I cant see a way past that as a compromise.

If you try it yourself, make sure there is a bit of space between the PVC folds at the sharp end to allow water to pass through when you wash it, and also make sure the bindings pull the PVC together tight enough that the blade can never touch the binding twine. The easiest way to achieve this is to not take the bindings all the way to the tip of the sharp end. And to stick something in the end when you are heat-forming the sheath. However you do it, try to make sure you can see through the sheath when its empty, to allow rinsing the sheath.

I found that after it was finished, heating the entire thing while the blade was removed, and bending it slightly from end to end, made the blade sit a bit tighter. Enough so that you could could hold the sheathed knife upside down and shake it, (without the safety rubber band) and the knife would not fall out of the sheath.

A total success, and definitely some tech that I will add to the ever growing grab bag of tricks that I might employ to solve something, somewhere, one day.




120 Things in 20 years just came back from a quick trip into the future, and found its all made of PVC...

and theres some 3D printed concrete housing.

but the futures definitely made mostly of PVC.

Cleaning Gravel:

Yesterday I cleaned about 5 cubic feet of new gravel.  In the past I have used progressive tubs and a bucket filled with holes.  I would start at one end and work my way down three or four barrels of progressively cleaner water.  This proved to be insufficient and the barrels became quite dirty very quickly which meant that I would constantly have to start over with more clean water.

But yesterday I used a small cement mixer.  Id put 10 shovel fulls of gravel in and filled it with water.  Then turn the mixer on for 15 seconds, and dump the water.  I did do this about 7 or 8 times until the water was running clear.

This next step may not be necessary, but then I did a final rinse in a white bucket.  I was able to easily see how clean the water was in the white bucket, and two quick rinses generally finished the job.

It took a few hours to perform this cleaning, but after several bad experiences with cloudy water, Im very happy with the results.  Today my water is perfectly clear.  

Pipe Size:

A couple months ago I added 10 feet of 1-1/4" pipe to the line from my fish tank to the grow bed.  It has worked well until recently when I noticed that the water in the fish tank was beginning to raise.  Closer inspection of the pipe revealed that gunk had built up on the surface and was slowing the water down.   I replaced the pipe with a clean 2" pipe.   Ill let you know in a few months how that worked out.   Im feeling confident that this is going to work out much better.    As a general rule Id say 2" or larger pipe should be used everywhere.

Im reasonably sure that the pressure difference between the Enterprise and (statistically speaking), pretty much every planets surface, would result in a lot of sinus pain and some scenes involving explosive snot.

I feel these scenes were conspicuously absent in the filming of the Star Trek franchise during beaming exercises.

I further feel that in the interest of reality, this should be easily rectified.

The absence of snot is the absence of reality...
